Believe it or not, we are one year into CP7 already! Network Rail has reflected on the CP7 highlights of the first year in their latest delivery plan, outlining the progress made in operating, maintaining and renewing the railway infrastructure across Great Britain.

Despite early challenges, Network Rail remains committed to improving safety, reliability, and efficiency throughout CP7. Some of Network Rail’s key achievements include:

The £1.4bn East Coast Digital Programme:

A major railway upgrade designed to modernise the East Coast Main Line by replacing traditional signals with in-cab digital signalling. This transformation enhances reliability, punctuality, and efficiency, reducing delays and improving passenger experience. By optimising train movements, it also contributes to a more sustainable railway, cutting carbon emissions and supporting greener transport solutions. As one of the UK's most significant rail improvements, the programme will bring long-term benefits for both passengers and operators.

The new Cambridge South station:

A key infrastructure project set to open in early 2026, improving transport links for the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Designed to support the city’s growing science and healthcare sectors, the station will enhance connectivity for patients, visitors, and employees, while integrating with future East West Rail services to boost economic growth and sustainability. In addition, Network Rail’s property joint venture, Blocwork, is advancing plans for a residential quarter at Cambridge North, creating over 400 homes in a low-car-use neighbourhood with enhanced cycling and public transport access. These projects are part of a wider strategy to unlock disused railway land, drive sustainable urban development, and modernise transport infrastructure in Cambridge.

These milestones mark just the beginning of CP7's ambitions, with Network Rail continuing to push forward with transformative projects that enhance connectivity, sustainability, and economic growth. As the journey unfolds, the focus remains on delivering a resilient and modern railway that meets the evolving needs of passengers and businesses alike.
