Graphics are being finalised, kit lists are growing by the day, and stand plans are taking shape. After another brilliant Rail Live in 2025, we’re ready to do it all again. Bigger conversations. More familiar faces. Plenty of hi vis and sunscreen!

Last month, Heathrow Airport celebrated 80 years since it first opened its doors to passengers. A milestone for one of the world’s busiest airports. From humble beginnings; tents, wooden walkways, and a basic airfield - it has grown into one of the most complex and connected transport hubs on the planet. Beyond the destinations, the departures, and the arrivals, there’s another story. One built on infrastructure, engineering, and collaboration.

Air travel is one of the safest modes of transport in the world, but behind that safety lies a constant, often unseen challenge: managing wildlife around airports. Among the most significant risks are bird strikes, where birds collide with aircraft during take-off, landing, or flight. When you’re working inside an active military base, there’s no room for error. Every detail matters, from compliance and safety to programme certainty and long-term durability. That was the challenge facing the B Lock handrail upgrade at HMNB Portsmouth, a complex infrastructure project delivered by KBS Maritime as Main Contractor, with Suttle Projects and KITE Projects working in close partnership to deliver a bespoke handrail solution.

Rather than predictable periods of cold, we’re now dealing with sharp swings in weather; cold snaps followed by heavy rain, flooding, high winds and rapid thaws, often within weeks of each other. For infrastructure, that change is far more challenging than cold weather alone.

It takes the collaboration of many engineers, contractors, and specialist partners to keep airports running smoothly, and every detail matters. Back in 2022, KITE Projects had the privilege of being part of that story at Heathrow Terminal 5, one of the busiest and most celebrated airport terminals in the world.
