Think Heathrow Airport is just runways, terminals, and departures? Think again. Beneath the surface lies a world of hidden engineering, forgotten history, and remarkable infrastructure that keeps millions of passengers moving every year. These 10 things you didn't know about Heathrow Airport reveal the surprising stories behind the UK's busiest airport.

1. Heathrow is Europe's busiest hub

Think Heathrow is busy? It handles more passengers than any other airport in Europe. However, to help control noise pollution, the UK Government has capped the airport at 480,000 flights per year.

2. There's over 30 miles of baggage conveyors underground

Your suitcase goes on quite a journey before you see it again. Deep beneath the terminals lies a complex baggage conveyor network stretching more than 30 miles. To handle the huge volume of luggage, Terminal 5 alone processes nearly 53 million bags every year using an underground network of 44 rapid-sorting reclaim belts. The system is so highly optimised that its target is for the first bag to arrive on the reclaim belt within 15 minutes of the aircraft doors opening.

3. Heathrow handles some unusual cargo

It's not just holidaymakers passing through Heathrow. Alongside millions of passengers each year, the airport's cargo centre has transported everything from racehorses and rhinos to sharks and even components for the International Space Station.

4. A plane takes off or lands every 45 seconds

Blink and you'll probably miss one. At Heathrow, a plane takes off or lands approximately every 45 seconds. With such a tightly planned schedule, even a 10-minute delay can create a domino effect that impacts flights across the globe.

5. Engineers moved two rivers to build Terminal 5

Building Terminal 5 wasn't as simple as clearing some land. The chosen site contained two historic rivers, so engineers redesigned the landscape and diverted both waterways around the perimeter of the airport instead.

6. There's a hidden "ghost" railway station beneath Terminal 5

One of Heathrow's biggest secrets lies underground. Hidden beneath Terminal 5 is an enormous concrete vault built to accommodate potential future rail links. Although constructed in 2008, it remains empty today, waiting for the right project to bring it to life.

7. Heathrow can be seen from space

Heathrow is so vast that it's caught the attention of astronauts. The airport has been photographed from space by NASA, highlighting the enormous scale of its runways and infrastructure.

8. Heathrow is named after a lost village

Before Heathrow Airport existed, there was a village. The airport takes its name from the former hamlet of Heath Row, which was demolished during the Second World War before the site became the international airport we know today.

9. Why is there no Terminal 1?

Have you ever wondered why Heathrow jumps from Terminal 5 straight back to Terminal 2? That's because Terminal 1 closed in 2015 to make way for the expansion of Terminal 2. You can find out more in our dedicated blog post on this topic here!

10. Heathrow has a secret "Terminal 6"

Not all of Heathrow's terminals appear on the departure boards. The airport has an unofficial "Terminal 6", a highly secure private facility used exclusively by members of the Royal Family, visiting heads of state, and other VIPs.
