Not every project can be solved with an off-the-shelf component.


Sometimes a project calls for a particular shape, material or finish that needs a more bespoke approach. That's where metal casting can open up new possibilities.

So, what is metal casting?


Metal casting is a manufacturing process where molten metal is poured into a mould to create a specific shape. Once cooled and solidified, the component is removed from the mould and undergoes a series of finishing and inspection processes before it's ready for use.


One of the key benefits of casting is the flexibility it can provide when creating complex or bespoke components.


From design to finished product


For bespoke cast components, collaboration is key.


KITE Projects can work alongside specialist foundries to discuss everything from bespoke moulds and samples through to production quantities, programme and delivery requirements.


There are a few practical considerations too. Casting is generally carried out in batches, so lead times can be longer than for some other manufacturing methods. The mould is also made specifically for the component, which means there is an initial investment. This becomes more cost-effective when spread across a larger number of castings.


This means we can look at different options depending on what the project actually needs, rather than trying to make a standard solution fit.


Bespoke doesn't mean non-compliant


When it comes to handrails and access systems, appearance isn't the only consideration.

Even decorative or bespoke handrails still need to perform their intended function and meet the relevant project requirements. Compliance and safety therefore remain central to the design process, whatever manufacturing method is used.



And what happens after casting?


Once a component has been cast, there's still work to do.


Castings may need to be cleaned, inspected and finished before being prepared for delivery. Surface preparation, priming and coating can also be carried out to achieve the required specification and finish, with different colours and coatings available depending on the project.


A good fit for heritage projects


Cast components can also be particularly useful for heritage reconstruction.

In some locations, the look and feel of existing infrastructure is an important part of the experience. Think of seaside towns, for example, where familiar railings, access points and other features can become part of people's memories.


People often return to places they visited as children and want to see that same character preserved for the next generation.


Casting can provide a way to recreate more traditional or distinctive components while still considering the performance, safety and specification requirements of a modern project.
