Are your Access Points Safe?

Blurred train passes an empty station with wet pavement. "Way Out" sign visible. Trees line the background. Calm, overcast mood.

Safety. A value so important, but one that many take for granted. One slip or fall is all it takes to change a life. Whether you’re a project manager, a rail operator, or part of a local council, creating a safe environment isn’t optional, it’s an obligation. The question you should be asking is: Are your access points safe?

Safety beyond the Workplace

Every company has an obligation to ensure its employees can get to work and back home safely. But it’s not just safety at the workplace, it’s also the safety of how we get to and from our workplaces. This is where it is important to have safe access points, providing a safe route down embankments to railway tracks or highways.

What makes an access point safe?

Traditional solutions like timber or concrete steps often fail to comply with safety standards. Timber rots over time. Concrete can quickly collect debris or become slippery in icy conditions. Both can lead to slips, falls, and serious injuries.

At KITE Projects, we believe safety should never be compromised. That’s why we developed KITE Step, a modular, compliant steel access system designed with user protection in mind. Featuring:

  • Open mesh stair treads with slip-resistant ‘octopus’ nosing for enhanced grip

  • GRP grating that reduces debris build-up and improves performance in freezing conditions

  • A durable, sustainable design that resists weathering and deterioration

These elements work together to create a solution that’s more than just functional - it’s reliable, robust, and safe for everyone who uses it.

Leveraging Technology: Network Rail’s Access Points App

To further support safe and informed site access across the UK rail network, Network Rail introduced its Access Points App - a digital tool designed for everyone working on or around railway infrastructure.

The app helps users:

  • Locate access points accurately and efficiently

  • View safety-critical information (like hazards or nearby equipment)

  • Report issues and improve communication on the ground

By making access point data more transparent and readily available, the app promotes better planning, reduces risk, and helps everyone return home safely. It’s part of a broader movement toward digital-first safety solutions that complement physical improvements like KITE Step.

Protecting your network

At KITE Projects, ‘Protecting your Network’ is a state of mind, demonstrated by ‘bigger thinking to make bigger impacts’. Access is about how we insure all people are protected when using our installations, by creating solutions that consider the full spectrum of users, from workers active on infrastructure projects, through to the local communities that live alongside. We protect your network through the design and supply of safe & sustainable access point solutions.
